New Cafe with Community at its Core

September 15, 2022

Ballarat Community Health (BCH) is excited to be opening a volunteer-operated café based right here in Lucas!

The café, located on the ground floor of 12 Lilburne Street – just inside the entrance to the Ballarat Community Health building – has been revitalised since COVID-19 restrictions halted its use almost three years ago. It is now home to barista made coffee and handmade treats on weekdays.

BCH volunteers and the Yuille Park Young Parents group offer select menu options from the new café set up. The Yuille Park students partner with BCH to plan, organise and implement all aspects of the operation, from food preparation and food handling to money handling.

The VCAL and Community Projects offered by Yuille Park are designed to prepare students for further education, training, or employment by providing them with work-related experience, literacy and numeracy skills and an opportunity to develop personal skills.

In addition to this partnership work, BCH volunteers enjoy a diverse range of roles including gardening, coordinating walking groups (based in Lucas), hosting community events, implementing the Second Bite food rescue program, helping with BCH mail delivery and barista roles.

BCH is always on the lookout for new volunteers. If you’re interested in being part of a great community-minded organisation, please visit Ballarat Community Health to register.
